Market Research Study Identifies Toughest Customers

You have been selling things your whole life and probably never realized it. I don’t know your background or what your current career path is but if you have ever been on a job interview, tried out for the baseball team or caught yourself yelling over some cheesy techno music at the girl you have been buying drinks all night in hopes of getting her number……you are in the sales business.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could identify your hardest customer to win over, find out how to overcome their objections and eventually make them a “customer”? Well I have followed trends that span decades and have done a ridiculous amount of research and have narrowed down that information and want to share it with you today.

Ok…Wait For It…Wait For It….Survey Says….Your toughest customer that you ever will have to convince has been and will always be yourself. You must first believe in what you are pushing whether it be your resume, your fishing skills or your Jeopardy knowledge. If you aren’t confident in what you do or sell you won’t earn anyone elses confidence either.

Now that you realize we are all in the same business, here are some pointers:

  • Believe in the company and product you are marketing. People join people and not businesses but why start behind the 8 ball and try to sell meat to a Catholic during Lent (little known secret…’ll can still sell meat to Catholics on Lent even though they will admit to eating it).
  • Learn about the people you are marketing to. If you are going on a job interview, learn about the company, their mission statement and their management. If you were trying to pick up that lady at the club…find out what she was drinking and buy her the same drink. If you buy her a Sex In The City style Cosmopolitan and she is a classy Jack Daniels straight up with a Marlboro chaser kinda girl…you might not succeed. See how easy this is.
  • Learn about yourself. If you have a philosophy that you live by stay true to it and don’t be wishy washy. Don’t be a sheep in wolfs clothing, it is easier to be you and have people of like interests gravitate to you then to fake it and people find out you are a fraud. I’m not saying shove your political, religious or philosophical beliefs down everybody’s throat but you can still have your own opinions and values without being on a soapbox.
  • Educate Yourself – If you are weak in some areas of what you are trying to achieve, use the tools and information that are available and use it. This is the 21st century…get with the program. They built an information highway so ride that sucker.

Now that you know who your toughest customer will be, go educate yourself and project your confidence on to your prospects and your results will greatly improve. Sell yourself before you try to sell somebody else, would you do business with you? If not identify the weak spots and toughen em up.

    Excellent breakdown here.

    Instead of focusing on a tough customer it’s best to focus on the person the customer responds to: you. Make personal development your best friend. Take the time to learn about who you’re connecting with. Most of all believe 100% in yourself, your company and your product since folks pick up on this belief on a subconscious level.

    Sound advice your sharing here. You will always be you’re toughest sell and if you do not believe in what you are doing, then you’re sunk already.

    Learn everything about your company, so if a question comes up, you will already have the answer and this will give you so much more credibility.

      Thanks Ian…confidence can be the difference between success and failure but sometimes you can gain confidence even if you fail. There is no greater feeling than conquering something that once conquered you. If you don’t know everything about your company, make sure you have a strong up line who will reinforce the information you need but you will look very powerful if you have the answers ready when you need them.
